In the Paper Again

I’ve been remiss in my bloging, but I’ve been out of town and off again taking care of people near and dear to me who are not doing so well. Upon returning in 9 days I will blog away and start running after that fast moving train once again. My pal Chris Minotti, (and she can do the same for you) has been here trying to organize these pages with me so they begin to make some sense. My eyes have glazed over more than once….

But I was in the paper once again and this is the excerpt where I am mentioned.  Really, who is more important than me in my world?

Action: Hoard cash

Still other people have been forced to hoard cash and batten down the hatches out of fear of losing homes or jobs.

Bette Publicker, a 58-year-old event planner and jewelry designer in Scottsdale, said she’d like to be investing right now, given that “prices are so low.”

But she’s been out of work for a year and doesn’t have money to spare. Before, she made a habit of investing her income-tax refunds. But that source of cash has dried up for her, and she’s dipping into her savings to make ends meet.

“It’s pretty scary,” Publicker said of her retirement plans. “I know I’m going to be working long into the sunset.”

AZ Republic Article

HEY! I’m famous…..I’ve gotten many calls from pals and family about the article in today’s Arizona Republic throughout the day. It’s been fun.

However most of the day has been spent with Chris Minotti who has been helping me with computer issues. I learned today how to use the ‘tab’ option at the top of the internet page. She roamed around in the program guts and did some magical things that made my computer respond much quicker, emptied files, defragged, and some other things that I didn’t quite get.

After that we went onto my blog and moved around reorganized made an ‘About’ page, added some recent comments and explored possibilities of what this blog could be. Chris has a great service called “Computer Tutor” and will come to your house and work with you on what your needs are. Work on you and your computer so you bond with your own machine. chrisaminotti@gmail.com  She explained that I need more memory, not surprising as my brain needs the same.

I have 2 other businesses. I have a service called ‘Events and Happiness’ which is an event planning service. I do family celebrations and special meals as well as wine tasting dinners. I also do business meetings and office parties.

I also have a jewelry business called BP Designs, Excitement for your Neck. I have a booth at the Scottsdale Farmer’s Market in Old Town Scottsdale (Saturday mornings) and at the Bead Museum in Glendale. I tried to link these businesses to this blog, but I was unsuccessful. This new linking skill will be attempted at another time. I’m tired!

Why the computer is not my friend (and other fun stories)

It seems I have done some things wrong on my blog, (go figure) because a few people have emailed to explain things that I have no understanding about.  I’m waiting  for my friend Chris M. to come over and set me up right.

I’d like to tell whom ever is following this blog a few things.

I got my first computer in 1998 or there abouts; a Fujitsu laptop. It was quite expensive for me at the time. I had it for less than a week, before the I had even sent in the warranty card. THEN, my best friend’s 2 year old daughter, Margaux, spilled a cup of thick baby apricot juice in the keyboard of the laptop. It was a miracle that I didn’t harm anyone as I am not known for holding back. I did feel tears falling though.

It took near to a month, and many dollars for the machine to work but never to perfection, or so the technician said. I was taking short story classes at Hunter College and the computer was used almost exclusively for that purpose. I can tell you the damned thing kept going down and loosing my work……user malfunction or apricot juice…I ask you. The dog didn’t eat my homework. The computer did.

Focus of this blog

The purpose of this blog will be my journey to join the technological age. For those who have youth, (or access to children) on their side, this may not be of interest. However for those with a bit of age to boast about who like me, have muddled along using their computers almost exclusively for e-mail  and shopping, this may be  something to follow and hopefully enjoy.

I view my computer as the infuriating roommate that I have to put up with.  There are days we get along and I easily accomplish something without too much angst. But then there are other days there are threats, pounding, whining, panicked phone calls, and then turning the damned thing off, recovering with a large glass of wine or a huge scoop of Ben and Jerry’s depending on the time of day.

The guides on my journey are Bill Austin from EVliving and Chris Minotti from Scottsdale Job Network which ran the original class where I started. (www.scottsdalenetwork.com) (www.evliving.com). I’m sure there will be others along the way.

Now that I am looking for new job and business opportunities ‘social networking skills’ seem to be as necessary as a resume, business cards and gumption. In every networking event I am asked about websites, Inkedin, and my Facebook. Now perhaps my eyes won’t glaze over and I won’t have to fake cough an answer.

This is the beginning of my story and I’m sticking to it!

I’ll be back in a few days….

Bette

I’m being dragged kicking and screaming into the technological world. It is like running with a broken leg after a fast moving train.
