Focus of this blog
April 29, 2009 bettepublicker
The purpose of this blog will be my journey to join the technological age. For those who have youth, (or access to children) on their side, this may not be of interest. However for those with a bit of age to boast about who like me, have muddled along using their computers almost exclusively for e-mail and shopping, this may be something to follow and hopefully enjoy.
I view my computer as the infuriating roommate that I have to put up with. There are days we get along and I easily accomplish something without too much angst. But then there are other days there are threats, pounding, whining, panicked phone calls, and then turning the damned thing off, recovering with a large glass of wine or a huge scoop of Ben and Jerry’s depending on the time of day.
The guides on my journey are Bill Austin from EVliving and Chris Minotti from Scottsdale Job Network which ran the original class where I started. (www.scottsdalenetwork.com) (www.evliving.com). I’m sure there will be others along the way.
Now that I am looking for new job and business opportunities ‘social networking skills’ seem to be as necessary as a resume, business cards and gumption. In every networking event I am asked about websites, Inkedin, and my Facebook. Now perhaps my eyes won’t glaze over and I won’t have to fake cough an answer.
This is the beginning of my story and I’m sticking to it!
I’ll be back in a few days….

Bette,
Great to see you writing, looks like you’re off to a great start, I loved the “kicking and screaming” reference from the workshop, you were a really good sport about it with the class, and hope you do well in this new venture.
Yes, social networking skills are becoming necessary in job search, and the workplace in general, and it is something I was asked about recently in relation to us older folks, and how we will handle it.
Have a fun time with it, and learn all you can.
